Author Avery Winslow
The fairground was chaos—lights flashing, thunder rolling, the crowded walkways a blur of shimmer and noise.
I didn’t hear her cry, only caught a flash of yellow beneath the bleachers, a small figure crouched low.
Her dress clung to her knees, curls plastered to her cheeks, her little body trembling… fragile, like a leaf caught in the wind.
For a heartbeat, I thought she was a forgotten jacket—rain-washed, discarded. Then her head lifted, and my breath stuttered.
I ducked under the frame, gravel biting into my knees as I crouched.
The struts overhead groaned with the weight of the storm, rain pouring in relentless sheets only inches away.
She didn’t move. Didn’t speak. Just watched me, her eyes almost too big for her delicate face—dark, wet, full of something I felt in my bones.
“Hey,” I murmured, soft. “Are you hurt?”
A small shake of her head. Her chin trembled.
“What’s your name, sweetheart?”
“Lily.”
The word was barely there—thin, tight, far too contained for someone so young.
I edged closer, careful not to crowd her. “I’m Kate. Can I help you find your mom or dad?”
A shrug. Then her hands gripped her knees tighter.
“I don’t have a mommy,” she whispered, eyes fixed on the ground. “I just have a Daddy.”
Something sharp lodged beneath my ribs. “Then let’s get you back to him.”
I offered my hand.
She hesitated—studied it like it might vanish, then slipped her cold, damp fingers into mine. So small. So fragile.
We stepped out together.
But the moment Lily’s head cleared the bleachers, everything changed.
Security saw us.
Three men broke from the crowd like shadows with purpose—civilian clothes, military precision. One tapped his earpiece, another signaled with a steady hand.
“Make space,” he said—calm, commanding.
And the crowd obeyed. People parted, stalls shifted, the path opening clean and wide.
Then I saw him.
Tall. Still. A fixed point in the storm. Rain ran down his jaw, his coat soaked through, one hand clenched, the other half-raised—frozen mid-reach.
His eyes… wild… locked on her as if the rest of the world didn’t exist.
“Daddy?” Lily breathed, and the sound was half a sob.
He moved before she finished.
He dropped to one knee, arms open, pavement pooling around him.
She launched. He caught her, folding her close, holding on like her weight put his world back where it belonged.
“You’re okay,” he murmured into her hair, voice breaking. “You’re okay now, and Daddy’s never letting go.”
“I didn’t cry,” she said softly. “Only a little.”
His laugh cracked through the storm. He kissed the top of her head, lingering there like he was afraid she might slip away.
Then… he looked at me.
Slowly. Carefully. As though pulling himself back from something primal.
“She was under the bleachers,” I told him. “Hiding from the storm.”
His jaw tightened.
And then he nodded—once.
“Thank you.”
No theatrics. Just raw.
He adjusted her in his arms and stepped closer, his eyes never leaving mine. “Card.”
One of his men produced a slim leather case and flipped it open.
A single white card appeared—thick, embossed, important.
But he didn’t let them hand it over.
He took my hand himself—warm, sure.
Turned it open, pressed the card into my palm, closed my fingers around it… sealing it there.
He closed the distance, the scent of rain and heat and something dark, expensive, wrapping around me.
His voice was low, each word measured.
“Thank you for saving my little girl.”
A pause. Softer now. Dangerous in its gentleness.
“Can I see you again?”
